Turning Torso, Malmö
Photos of a twisted skyscraper, by Stefan Stenudd
The Turning Torso skyscraper in Malmö, Sweden, is based on a sculpture by its architect, Santiago Calatrava, but it was not his idea to turn it into a building. That came from Johnny Örbäck, who was the CEO of the company later to have it built. When the costs almost doubled what was budgeted, Örbäck had to resign. But the building was completed — all 54 stories and 190 meters. It opened on August 27, 2005. I took most of the photos below in the weeks before the opening.
I am quite fond of this odd structure in the Malmö cityscape. I wouldn't want to live in one of its apartments, though. You can't open the windows.

The two photos above are from 2004, before the construction was completed.

The photo above is from early August, so I have no idea where the snow came from.

The six following photos show Turning Torso all but disappearing in a mist. A very strange thing. For a while it was completely gone, the whole thing. Then it slowly started to reappear, from the top down. It happened on September 4, 2005, just a week after its opening — right when a fiery debate about its cost had erupted. As if it went into hiding.

The remaining photos are from later years.
